Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My music video uses images and shots that reflect the lyrics in the song, for example in my video each time the lyrics are ‘Minutes and Hours we never had’ a clock appears in the background. I found this is a convention of a lot of music videos around at the moment. My main character being young also works with the song lyrics. I also found that in a lot of music videos the music finishes before the video has maybe 5-10 seconds before. I have used this convention in my video as I feel it concludes the music video well.
I also found that shots of the performer, be that mid shots or close ups are very common. This type of shot can be linked to the theories of Roy Shuker who said that the audience had to feel they know the performer on a social level. I have also kept my main character well lit to make sure the audience can clearly see her. In my music video I have also thought about some of Dyers theories, the main performer, a young girl, links to Dyers theory of youth. My video conforms to this view by the youthful dancing rather than choreography and profession dancing.
Another convention of music video is fast cutting and slow paced cutting. It differs for different genres; rap, pop and dance are fast paced and cut quickly. Indie and soul tend to use slow paced cuts like in the video I analysed ‘Fire’ by Kasabian. In my music video I have used a slow paced background with lights and imagery appearing such as clocks. Throughout the video my main character is in the centre of the shots. I have also thought about Pete Fraser’s theory of conventions in a video which form a bond between the audience and the main character. I then acted on this by ensuring my main character had the 'lovable' factor
I have challenged a common convention of music videos which is having a narrative, I felt that in a lot of music videos the video is more focused on the narrative Therefore in my music video I have made the visual aspect of it easy on the eye and slightly comic to make enjoying and appreciating the song more a highlight of the video.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My ancillary texts work well with my music video again highlighting the important of the song more than the visual. This does not mean I do not understand that a music video is to be enjoyed and work with the song but I feel a video which compliments the song and adds a visual side the lyrics works better than a narrative. In my digipak I have used the main character on the inside left to add that visual image of minutes and hours. The colour scheme of this digipac is consistent all the way through, using a bright blue background in Photoshop which has been edited to be aesthetically pleasing and conform to the music video theme which is youth. I have also used a clock which has been edited and coloured the same way as the background but brought to the front to make it stand out, this again conforming to the lyrics of the song.

I did a lot of research on music videos and I found that in many cases there were too much information, obviously a sufficient amount is needed but some were in my opinion overloaded. By overloaded I mean that the information and images were squashed into the page and made the aesthetics of the website less appealing.
I made sure that I did not forget this when it came to making my website, I aimed to include all the information and lay out my website so that it is easy to use and not cluttered. I wanted my web page to be entertaining for the audience but informational at the same time. To ensure this I created the title using bright colours to conform to the band title. To ensure my web page was information I included tour date information and links to pages such as shop, so that the user is able to see what he/she can purchase.
The images I have used on my website and digipac are original images of the main character and shots I sued during the making of my music video. Websites such as the one for ACDC influenced the way I designed my website. ACDC ‘s website is a square block of information and ensures that the page is not too big and requires scrolling but provides the user with good information and the necessary links to other pages. My website follows this convention completely, it does not require any scrolling and has information on the home page and the four links at the top clearly displayed and easy to see.

The combination of both my ancillary texts and my music video are very effective the style and conformities used in them does not change. I have maintained my challenge of some conventional media texts by trying to focus the music video on the music and not on subplots and this is carried on throughout my website and digipac using images from the song lyrics.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Audience feedback can be a vital part of the creative process or to improve some work if the right people are asked. Asking an audience who are interested in the song and already have an idea about what the music video and ancillary texts should look like makes the feedback much more specific. Feedback from yourself can be biased and you have created what you think the video should look like therefore you cannot properly assess what improves need to be made.
I found that the work I have produced was given very narrow comments from all the people that gave me feedback. The feedback was very useful and I can understand exactly where they are coming from, the feedback I received was that my ancillary texts were laid out in a very user friendly way but lacked information. After viewing some other of the work creating I agreed with the comments made and thought they were fair and very constructive.
Feedback on my website was very similar, a lot of people wanted to see more colour and information. I thought about this and I have to say that I agree, although I feel the way I have created the website is good and works well I think that some added colour and information could make the website more inviting. I People said they didn’t like the way the music could not be turned off as sometimes people may just want to view updates to the website and not listen to song, something I have not thought about. Positive comments concerning the website were that it was easy to use and all the information was displayed clearly.
I explained to the people who reviewed my music video that I was trying to focus on the song lyrics and make the video compliment this. Having this in mind they gave me feedback on both what worked well with this convention and how I could make my video more conventional to other media texts.
I received a lot of positive feedback concerning my editing, mainly focused on the clocks that appearing in background which are speed up to 2500% to show that time flows fast. The feedback showed that this editing is not seen often and works well with the lyrics and the video I created. Negative feedback was that the people who reviewed my video felt it needed more than one main character. A lot of people said I should have used two other character one mid age and one old to further the theme I was going aiming for. I had comments that said the background was sometimes too fast and could work better slowed down to show time going slowly and fast. It was also mentioned that a fadeout would have been better on the clocks rather than them disappearing.
After reading and thinking about the feedback I received it is clear to me where I have succeeded and where maybe I have let the music video down. Feedback from other people opens your eyes to what a common view on what works well is and not just my view. Feedback from other people can and was in my case essential to giving me a better idea of how the video can improved and what audiences like to see.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Throughout the research stage I used new media technologies. The computer is a new media technology and I used to research in two different ways. The first being the obvious which is use Google and YouTube. I used to Google to read up on genres and what they include. I found this very interesting and very useful I was then able to use this information to write my own description of what I feel each genre includes. This made the deciding stage of what genre of music video I want to create easier. I used YouTube to watch videos that were of the genre I wanted to create. This was extremely useful; I was able to experience first hand a music video that of the same genre I wanted to create. I then uploaded the videos I had watched to my blog and analysed them. This vastly increased my knowledge of the genre and what it was I wanted to create. The second way in which I used computers was to use a shared drive with my class mates, this made exchanging information on genres and music videos much quicker and much more informational.
I used a storyboard to show what it was I was planning to create. I made this storyboard by drawing it and then scanning it in. This gave me a much clearer idea of what I wanted my video to look like. This is because i could view on screen all the drawings and put together in my mind what I wanted to create.
To film I used one of the cameras from college, they are about 10 years old and so they are from the new age of film and media. Tripods go together with the cameras to give the best quality recording I also used this. I made good use of this technology to provide myself with a steady good quality video that can be edited to look how I want.
I then used Adobe’s Premiere Pro CS4. This is a programme that allows the user to edit a video to be basically anything they want. Using this programme I sped my video to create the 'Minutes and 'Hours theme I was going for. Using this programme I was also able to make two films run at the same time making one appear as a background by fading the visibility.
I designed my website using Flash CS4 Professional. Using this programme I was able to create a background which looked 3d and stood out. I imported images which I then blurred and faded to create an aesthetically pleasing appeal. I used the programme to create links to other pages that I had made.
To make my digipc I used Photoshop which is an advanced form of the well known programme paint. I made this is in the same style I made the website, by blurring images and using 3d shapes. The create the Background I use the programmes main features which allow colours to be compiled on top of each other and blending the create the desired look.
To write this evaluation I have used word and the Internet. I wrote it into word which is programme designed for the purpose of writing. It allows the user to write up a document which looks well presented and has been spell checked. This means that not only is my work well presented it contains no mistakes that I may miss while reading through it. I have used the Internet to create a blog to store all my work, this has made uploading work and allowing people to see it much easier because it can accessed by anybody on any computer with the Internet.

music track

I chose this track because it is an easy listening track that goes with the video idea i wanted to make. I wanted to use my editting skills to increase the speed of the film i make to give the impression of time going fast. This meant that the easy listening song 'Minutes and Hours' was perfect for me. The song is only 3 minutes and 15 seconds long which means i have plenty of time for lots of film sped up using adobe.

Risk Assessment

When using any equipment even a basic camera it is important to look at the risk assessment to reduce the change of injury to those involved in the film making.
There will be a lot of potential physical hazard when filming such as car parks, near main roads, parks with dogs, any raised areas. Making parts of the film which are ICT based will require regular breaks to rest eyes and have a stretch to avoid muscle cramps.
Making sure that equipment is set up correctly can prove vital to avoiding injury, checking a camera stand is set up and secure will avoid the risk of it falling over onto a nearby person.
Having a check lift of people on the filming site will make it clear how many people should be in any particular spot at one point making sure there is enough space for these people. over crowding can cause pushing and lead to people falling onto hard surfaces.

CD Cover Back Side

I have used a silver colour as it stands out well and looks smart. I have left a lot of space only putting the least amount of detail possible so that it is eye catching. The CD cover displays clearly the song title and the song. I have used large font so that it is possible to see the CD cover from far away.

Treatment

I intend to make a video that's soul focus is on the title of the song. I will do this by demonstrating time and change. I will do this by editting my filming to make it faster. I will be filming mostly the weather and how it changes. I will use clouds, the wind, trees and grass. I will for example film some clouds and then edit this so that when it is watched back the clouds appear to move really fast.
My video will have one actor in and this will be a girl running too and from the camera, as she gets further away from the camera it shows time moving on. I will use props such as clocks to show different times and hours. I will film one clock and edit this again so that it seems like the hands are constantly moving and time is going really fast.
I feel the best way to capture this song is focus on the theme of time and express how important this is.

Research into CD covers

The back of the CD cover has the same themes as the front does with regards to colour. The back has a list of the tracks on this CD which in this case is not many as it is a CD cover for a single track.

Research into Band Websites

Research into target audiences

This Questionnaire gives some positive results for the music video I am planning to make. 5 out of the 8 people in my questionnaire preferred cartoon/animated music videos to the actual band performing and this was from both males and females.
7 out of my 8 people have easy access to music videos which is good as I will be making one and would want as many people to see it as possible.
The Music video made for the song 'Take On Me' by AHA was liked by 6 out the 8 people asked. I am planning to make a video using some of the techniques used in that music video.
Target audience for a cartoon video is people from any age up to about 50, as long as rhe video contains mature themes adults will be interested in watching it.

Textual Analysis of Music Videos

Kasabian-Fire

This song is by the band Kasabian and is called 'Fire'. The video was made by British director W.I.Z. Kasabian are an Indie rock band. One characteristic of this genre is that it can be quiet and polite music that flows in a steady easy way. This is typical of the the song 'Fire' and it shows in the video with the singers running along to sound of the music. Although in the video they are rushing the music goes with it and slows it right down.

At the start of the video a member of the band is singing and looking at himself in the mirror. This gives a visual representation of the song being performed by the band. The song is called 'Fire' and the lighting in the music video is a light orange from the sun this goes with the colour of fire. When the song reaches the chorus it speeds up and this is shown in the video as the band storm into a bank and steal money from it. This amplifies the song. The band use their guitars as guns this gives the video a comedy side to it and goes with the inde rock theme of calm polite music. The lighting goes dark for a few seconds 3 minutes in when the music dies down this goes with the music very well. The gun shots in the music video are a contridiction of using guitars as guns and these sounds are editted into the video and are not in the song alone. The music notes are seen on paper at the start and then again at the end representing the song.

To sell the video their are many close ups of members in the band. The image of 'bad boys' is being offered to the audience through both the song and the music video. The songs lyrics talking about alcohol and drugs and to go with this in the video the band breaking in to and stealing from a bank. The Characters are all wearing different clothing, one character is wearing a suit, hat and sun glasses this is selling his looks. Other than this the band are not on sexual display. This does not relate to some other videos where for example the band are the centre point of the video and they are their to sell themselves rather than the music. This video is very performance based, the music goes with the video and it all runs smoothly together.

I am now going to look at a video that is different to the one above as I am not totally sure which sort of video I will be making myself. I do believe it will be from the same genre of the two videos I have looked at here.

Aha- Take On Me

This Music video is by Aha and the song is called 'Take On Me'. It was directed by Steve Barron and the genre of music is pop. Pop music tradionally is aimed at young people and they are short simple love songs. Their is always an emphasis of technology over muscianship. The video does contain a love theme and the technology involved could easily be described as being more the centre of the video than the music.

The music starts with a short snappy beat and the music works really well with this by cutting quickly from one cartoon picture to another. As the music starts to quicken the cartoon comes alive and a rush of motorbikes go from the right hand side of the screen to the left. The music lyrics start as the cartoon changes to real life and the audience begins to be told the story behind the cartoon. The words 'take on me' are spoken in the song as the woman in the video sees the cartoon come alive infront of her as the man in the cartoon winks at her. This is giving a visual representation of what the music means by take on me as the man in the video is challenging her. The woman is then pulled into the cartoon making her a cartoon herself and bringing her into this cartoon story. The woman and the man begin to sing the lyrics to each other. The lyrics are illustrated by the video really well, the line 'i'll be gone in a day or two' is always said with the man in the picture meaning that he means himself. To sell the band themselves half way through the video you see them in real life with their guitars peforming their song and it cuts to this quite a few times. To illustrate the lyrics, 'My worries away' the cartoon shows the man and a woman being followed by two men who look like they have the intention of causing harm. As the music dies down the man comes out of the cartoon and we see the man and woman together, this follows the love theme of pop music.

I think that the artist is on sexual display sometimes as it cuts to him in real life and shows the woman in the video with a real interest towards him once she has seen him not as a cartoon but as a real man. The characters are also wearing leather and this was the fashion back in time the video was produced which was in the late 1980's. The way the man struts in the music video gives the audience the view that he fancies himself, displaying him sexually. There is a reference to 'looking' when the man becomes real once stepping through this window in the cartoon. This has been used to make the audience aware of the characters appearance.

Directors Research Task

Chris Cunningham

Chris was born in 1970 in reading and grew up in Lakenheath Suffolk. Since his first production for Autechre he had a close relationship with "Wrap Records" Chris Cunninghams most well know for his videos for "Aphex Twins", "Come to Daddy" and "Windowlicker". Chris won the MTV music video award for breakthrough video. Chris has been nominated at the Brit Awards and he dirceted Madonna's "Frozen" video.

Chris Cunningham likes to focus on beauty and horror in his videos. I have seen the video "come to daddy" and it is very focused on horror. The set is dark and there is an old lady walking her dog this gives the sense of danger right from the start. Suddenly the television comes on and the music video comes to live with loud music and a face on the televison. I fel that this worked really well with the video and had the impacted intended by director Chris Cunningham which was to shock the audience.

Dave Meyers

Dave Meyers attended Loyola Marymount University after graduation from Berkeley High School. Meyers gained a degree in both Film Production and Philosophy. Meyers filmed his first music video with rap crew "The Whordias". Meyers won the 2003 MTV Video Music Award for Best Video of the Year. Recently Meyers has been trying his hand at 3d video making when in 2008 he made his first 3d music video for Missy Elliots single Ching-a-ling.
Meyers has worked with some of the best known male and female singers of the last 20 years which include Dido, Britney spears, Pink, Dave Matthew Band, Hilary Duff and Jay Z.
I have watched a couple of videos directed by Meyers and he does not use the same styles in all of his videos but it is able to split up all the videos he has directed into sections. For example one section can be emotional. Dido's " Thank You" and Britney Spear's " lucky" would be included in this section. In these videos Meyers uses props and scenes to emtionally involve the viewer in the song and whats going on in the video. In Britney Spear's music video "Lucky" Meyers shows Britney looking at herself whilst singing about being sad. This pulls the viewer in and gets them emitonal on Britneys side and to feel the same way that she does and relate how she feels to other situations.
